1,000 Unforgettable Senior Moments: Of Which We Could Remember Only 246

Author: Tom Friedman | Language: English | ISBN: B00GWVQ77Q | Format: EPUB

1,000 Unforgettable Senior Moments: Of Which We Could Remember Only 246 Description

No, you’re not losing your mind. And you’re definitely not alone. There’s Jimmy Carter, forgetting the nuclear launch codes in a suit at the dry cleaners. Rod Stewart fumbling for the name of the intense first love who inspired “Maggie Mae.” G. K. Chesterton writing a long letter to hismother announcing the good news about his engagement—while his mother is in the room with him. Marilyn Monroe blowing the same line through 52 takes during the filming of Some Like It Hot.

Celebrating history’s greatest mental lapses, is a perfect impulse book in the fine gift format of Famous Last Words. Not just outlandishly funny, it’s also a book of great comfort—after all, having a senior moment puts you in the company of Einstein, Lincoln, Beethoven, Newton, Toscanini, and a whole assortment of presidents, poets, philosophers, popes, and Nobel Prize–winners. Talk about gaffes. Here are best men forgetting to show up at the wedding. Judges staggered by the incompetence of their previous decisions. Senators frozen in front of TV cameras. Olympic officials gazing absently while bewildered runners continue through the finish line. Bono losing the only copy of his lyrics to a new album. Forget to pick up your copy today!

This is a short book with a large number of stories that purport to show forgetful moments. The stories are all relatively short. Most are about a paragraph and almost none are more than two.

For any such books the stories would have to fulfill one or, ideally, a number of criteria for such a book to be considered a success. Unfortunately this book fulfills none of the needed required. For example, it would be nice of the stories were witty. Unfortunately just about none are. It would also be nice if they were able to provide some insight into forgetfulness and aging. Again, few are. Very importantly, the stories should at least be entertaining. Another criteria that goes unfulfilled.

Also, quite a few of the stories can be cannot be considered even relevant to the topic. It is as if they are included only as filler to be able to complete the book, in much the same manner that many music "albums" have quite a bit of fluff just around the occasional hit or two so they justify their being marketed and sold as such. For example there is a story on how a jail was opened without prison doors as an example of the responsible engineers "forgetting" to add them in. More likely there was a problem with the contractors or spec problems that prevented them from being built on time as opposed to "forgetfulness" playing any part. There is another story of a doctor in antiquity claiming he was so good at his practice that he would never die from an illness. Then he fell down a set of stairs and broke his neck. This story, like a quite a few others, do not even bear on forgetfulness in any manner. They not only fill the book with irrelevant fluff but stretch the author's credibility.

All and all, as a result, only a one star book.
